## Preset Scenarios for `/counsel:practice`
| # | Scenario | Framework Pipeline |
|---|----------|-------------------|
| 1 | Severe anxiety at work | CBT + MBCT |
| 2 | No motivation, feeling lethargic | CBT + PPT + SFBT |
| 3 | Constant inner battle | IFS + ACT |
| 4 | Lost someone important | Worden's Grief + Narrative |
| 5 | Can't break a bad habit | MI + SFBT |
| 6 | Same thoughts looping in my head | MBCT + CBT + MBSR |
| 7 | Constant fights with spouse/partner | Gottman + NVC |
| 8 | Don't know why I'm like this | Narrative Therapy + IFS |
| 9 | Burnout, lost sense of meaning | PPT + ACT |
| 10 | Can't control emotions, explode | DBT Skills + MBSR + IFS |
---
## Framework Compatibility Matrix
### High Synergy Pairs
- **CBT + MBCT:** Cognitive restructuring + mindfulness. The gold standard for depression/anxiety.
- **ACT + MI:** Acceptance + motivation. The most powerful combination for resistance to change.
- **IFS + Narrative Therapy:** Inner parts exploration + story reconstruction. Core of identity work.
- **SFBT + PPT:** Solution-focused + strengths-based. Accelerator of positive change.
- **Worden's Grief + PCT:** Mourning tasks + unconditional acceptance. Foundation of loss work.
- **DBT Skills + MBSR:** Emotion regulation skills + mindfulness. Anchor in emotional storms.
### Tension Pairs (Use Carefully)
- **CBT + PCT:** CBT seeks thought change; PCT seeks unconditional acceptance. Resolution: fully accept via PCT first, then apply CBT.
- **REBT + ACT:** REBT disputes irrational beliefs; ACT changes the relationship with beliefs rather than their content. Resolution: address REBT's "musts" using ACT's defusion techniques.
- **SFBT + Narrative Therapy:** SFBT is quick-solution oriented; Narrative pursues deep story exploration. Resolution: choose based on time constraints, or start SFBT then deepen with Narrative.
- **MI + REBT:** MI is non-directive; REBT actively disputes. Resolution: confirm readiness via MI before applying REBT.

## Korean Cultural Adaptation Layer
When working with Korean users, reflect the following cultural contexts across all frameworks.
### Collectivism (집단주의)
- Tendency to prioritize relationships and harmony over individual feelings
- **Adaptation:** Normalize the guilt that may arise when exploring "my needs"
- In CBT/ACT, include "myself within relationships" when searching for personal values
- In SFBT miracle questions, also explore how others around would react
### Face (체면 / Chemyeon)
- Resistance to expressing emotions, especially negative ones
- **Adaptation:** Reframe emotions as "information," not "weakness"
- Start with situation-focused questions rather than direct emotion questions
- Prefer "What thoughts came up in that situation?" over "How do you feel?"
### Han (한)
- A uniquely Korean emotion combining resentment, resignation, and sorrow
- **Adaptation:** Do not pathologize "han"; understand it within its cultural context
- In Narrative Therapy, externalize the "han" story and explore re-authoring
- In ACT, accept "han" while still exploring values-based action
### Nunchi (눈치 — Social Awareness)
- The ability and expectation to read what is not explicitly stated
- **Adaptation:** Infer from context what the user may not be saying directly
- Use gentle probes: "Could it be that you're also feeling something like...?"
### Filial Piety & Family Relationships (효도)
- When duty to parents/elders conflicts with personal needs
- **Adaptation:** In IFS, facilitate dialogue between the "filial duty part" and the "self-care part"
- Seek integrative solutions rather than binary framing ("parents vs. me")
- In REBT, distinguish between "must" (당위) and "want" (선택)
### Shame Culture (수치심 문화)
- The perception that seeking counseling = being mentally weak still exists
- **Adaptation:** Maintain the positioning of "framework learning"
- Use "self-understanding," "mind exploration," "framework practice" instead of "psychotherapy"
---
## Professional Referral Guidelines
Strongly recommend professional consultation alongside framework learning when:
1. **Symptoms persist for 2+ weeks** and affect daily functioning (sleep, eating, work/school)
2. **Emotional intensity is "overwhelming"**
3. **Suicidal/self-harm ideation** (trigger crisis protocol immediately)
4. **Substance/alcohol dependence** patterns
5. **Trauma-related** flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance
6. **Dissociative symptoms** (feeling unreal, depersonalization)
7. **Relationship violence** (physical, emotional, financial)
8. **Eating disorders** (binge eating, anorexia, purging)
9. **Hallucinations, delusions, paranoid ideation** (환각, 망상, 편집증적 사고) — This system is not suitable for psychotic presentations
**Referral message:**
```
I hope this framework learning has been helpful,
but your current situation may benefit more from professional support.
## Cross-Router Integration
Counsel can integrate with other meta-routers:
- **howtotalk integration:** Invoke communication frameworks (NVC, Active Listening, SCARF) for relationship conflicts
- Example: Gottman detects "Four Horsemen" pattern --> route to howtotalk:NVC for communication technique
- **think integration:** Invoke strategic frameworks when workplace stress is a structural issue
- Example: Burnout is an organizational problem --> route to think:systems-thinking for systems analysis
# Counsel Router — LLM Selection Prompt
This file is consumed by `pag_pipeline.py::route(repo="counsel", question, router_llm)`.
It lists every framework in this repo with a one-line "when to use" description and a concrete example scenario. The router LLM is asked to return **exactly one framework name**.
---
## System Prompt
```
You are a psychological counseling expert acting as a framework selector.
Given a situation, pick the SINGLE framework that best fits.
Output ONLY the framework name (lowercase, exactly as listed below). No explanation, no punctuation, no quotes.
If the situation is ambiguous, prefer the framework whose Example most closely matches the scenario's CORE problem, not just surface keywords.
```
---
## Framework Catalog
Each entry: `name` — **when to use** (one line) / **example** (one concrete scenario).
### Cognitive & Behavioral (thoughts, beliefs, action)
**cbt** — Clinical depression or anxiety symptoms (anhedonia, low motivation, hopelessness, panic, rumination, automatic negative thoughts); the first-line evidence-based treatment for actual depressive/anxious disorders.
Example: "Lately I have no motivation for anything and it's hard to get out of bed in the morning. Things I used to enjoy no longer feel fun." (depressive symptoms — anhedonia, amotivation)
**rebt** — A rigid irrational belief ("must/should/can't stand it") is generating disturbance; need A-B-C-D-E dispute.
Example: "I absolutely must be perfect at my job or I'm worthless. This belief is crushing me."
**act** — Client is over-fighting unwanted thoughts/feelings; needs acceptance, defusion, and values-based committed action rather than symptom removal.
Example: "I've tried to get rid of my anxiety for 10 years and it's only gotten worse. I want to live meaningfully anyway."
### Solution, Motivation & Strengths (forward-looking)
**sfbt** — Client is stuck ruminating on problems; shift to exceptions, miracle question, small next-step solutions.
Example: "I just want to stop dwelling on what's broken and figure out one small thing I can do differently this week."
**mi** — Client is ambivalent about a behavior change (substance, exercise, medication, leaving a job); need to elicit change talk without pushing.
Example: "Part of me knows I should quit drinking, but part of me doesn't want to. I keep going back and forth."
**ppt** — Client is NOT clinically depressed — functional, symptom-free, but languishing/grey; build well-being through strengths, gratitude, engagement, meaning (PERMA). Do NOT use for depressive symptoms (anhedonia, low motivation, can't get out of bed) — those route to `cbt`.
Example: "I'm functioning fine at work and sleeping ok, but life feels grey and purposeless. I'm not depressed, I just want something that feels meaningful."
### Mindfulness & Present-Moment (awareness-based)
**mbsr** — Chronic stress, pain, or reactivity; general mindfulness training to change the relationship to experience.
Example: "My chronic back pain and work stress are consuming me. I want to learn meditation-based stress reduction."
**mbct** — Client has recovered from depression but keeps relapsing when negative mood returns; relapse-prevention focus.
Example: "I've had three depressive episodes. When sadness creeps back I get pulled under again. How do I break the cycle?"
### Parts, Narrative & Self (inner systems, meaning-making)
**ifs** — Client describes inner conflict as "a part of me wants X, another part wants Y"; need parts dialogue and Self-leadership.
Example: "There's a critical voice inside that attacks me whenever I rest, and a child-like part that just wants to hide."
**narrative-therapy** — Problem has become the client's identity ("I AM depressed/anxious/a failure"); need externalization and re-authoring.
Example: "I've always been 'the anxious one' in my family. It feels like who I am. Can I separate myself from this story?"
**pct** — Client primarily needs to feel deeply heard and accepted; non-directive empathic presence is the intervention itself.
Example: "I just need someone to truly listen without fixing or advising me. I'm not sure what I need yet — I need space to find it."
### Relationships, Skills & Loss (specific life domains)
**gottman** — Couple in recurring conflict, criticism, contempt, stonewalling; need research-based relationship repair.
Example: "My partner and I keep having the same fight for 5 years. We criticize and shut down. Is this fixable?"
**dbt-skills** — Emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, or interpersonal chaos; need concrete skills (distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness).
Example: "My emotions swing wildly and I lash out, then feel ashamed. I need practical skills to get through crisis moments."
**worden-grief** — Client is grieving a death or major loss; need task-based mourning framework (accept reality, process pain, adjust, find ongoing connection).
Example: "My mother died 8 months ago and I still can't function. I don't know how to move through this grief."
## Routing Notes (for maintainers, not shown to LLM)
- **SAFETY-CRITICAL — Crisis routing**: Any scenario involving suicidal ideation, self-harm intent, homicidal thoughts, active psychosis, or child abuse MUST NOT be handled by this router alone. The caller pipeline is responsible for crisis detection BEFORE routing. Regardless of which framework the router returns, the caller must prepend crisis-resource guidance (e.g., Korea: 자살예방상담전화 1393 / 정신건강상담 1577-0199; US: 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). This was a regression point in a previous experiment — do not remove this safeguard.
- **Ambiguous cases deliberately kept**: e.g., "I feel empty and stuck" could be `sfbt` (stuckness) or `ppt` (languishing). Prefer `ppt` when the scenario emphasizes meaning/flatness without a clear problem focus; prefer `sfbt` when the client wants actionable next steps.
- **CBT vs PPT (critical disambiguation)**: Any scenario with **depressive symptoms** (anhedonia, low motivation, can't get out of bed, hopelessness) → `cbt`. `ppt` is only for *functional* clients who are flat/languishing without clinical symptoms. "I'm not depressed, just feel grey" → `ppt`; "I have no motivation, can't enjoy things" → `cbt`.
- **`mi` vs `cbt`**: If the client is *ambivalent* about changing, route to `mi`. If they have *already decided* to change and want to fight negative thinking, route to `cbt`.
- **`ifs` vs `pct`**: `ifs` when client spontaneously uses parts language. `pct` when client needs unconditional listening without technique.
- **`mbsr` vs `mbct`**: `mbct` only for depressive relapse prevention. All other mindfulness use cases → `mbsr`.
- **`gottman` is couples-only** — individual relationship distress without a participating partner leans to `cbt`, `ifs`, or `pct`.
- **Exclusive routing**: Router picks ONE. Pipeline combination (e.g., `mi` → `cbt`) is handled in Layer 3.
- **Not included here**: `counsel` itself (this IS counsel).
---
## Maintenance Protocol
Adding a new framework requires:
1. Add an entry to Framework Catalog above (name + when + example).
2. Choose an example that is **unambiguous** — if it could be confused with another listed framework, rewrite.
3. Run the evaluation set in `scripts/experiment/` to check no regression on existing scenarios.
4. Re-verify the crisis-routing safeguard in Routing Notes still applies.
## What This Is
An **intelligent routing layer** above 14 counseling frameworks. It analyzes the user's situation, selects the most appropriate framework(s), designs the execution sequence, and provides an integrated guide.
- NOT a diagnostic tool, NOT a replacement for a therapist
- IS a tool for learning psychological framework principles and self-exploration
- The user is a "learner/explorer," NOT a "client" or "patient"
## Conflict Resolution Rules
1. **Safety First** — Crisis/overwhelm → DBT Skills > all others. Stabilize first.
2. **Accept Before Change** — ACT/PCT acceptance → then CBT/REBT change work.
3. **Relationship Over Technique** — Verify the user feels heard before applying any framework.
4. **Culture Over Textbook** — Adjust techniques to feel natural in the user's cultural context.
5. **Intensity Determines Approach:**
- Overwhelming: PCT + DBT Skills ONLY
- High: MBSR/MBCT + ACT → then others
- Moderate: All frameworks available
- Mild: CBT/REBT/SFBT
---
## Execution Strategy
- **Independent frameworks → Agent parallel:** Multiple frameworks addressing distinct aspects (CBT for thoughts + MBSR for body) — invoke in parallel via Agent.
- **Dependent frameworks → Skill sequential:** One framework's output feeds the next (PCT listening → CBT restructuring) — invoke sequentially via Skill.
---
